Placing Our Love in Krishna

In this talk Srila Prabhupada says, "To love your home, to love your country, to love your husband, to love your children, to love your wife, and on and on-all this love is more or less present in the animal kingdom. But that sort of love will not give you happiness. You'll be frustrated.... If you really want peace, if you really want satisfaction... then try to love Krishna." (September 1968, Seattle, Washington)

Govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajãmi. Our program is to worship Govinda, the original person, with love and devotion. This is Krishna consciousness. We are teaching people to love Krishna. That's all. Our program is to direct your love toward the proper place. Everyone wants to love, but they're being frustrated because their love is being misplaced. People do not understand where to place their love. First of all you love your body. Then, a little extended, you love your father and mother. Then you love your community, then your country, then the whole human society. And at last you love all living entities. But all this extended love will not give you satisfaction-until you reach the point of loving Krishna. Then you'll be satisfied.

For example, when you throw a stone into a lake, a circle begins expanding. The circle keeps expanding, expanding, expanding. . . And when the circle touches the shore, it stops. Until the circle reaches the shore of the lake, it must go on increasing. So we have to go on increasing and increasing our love until we love Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

There are two ways to increase your love. You can practice loving your society, loving your country, loving all humanity, all living entities, and on and on. Or you can directly love Krishna. Then everything is complete. It is so nice. Because Krsna is all attractive, love for Him includes everything. Why? Because Krishna is the center of everything. In family, if you love your father, then you love your brothers, your sisters, the servant of your father, the home of your father, the wife of your father (namely, your mother)-everyone. The central point is the father. Similarly, if you love Krishna, then your love will be expanded everywhere.

Another example: If you love a tree, you can simply pour water on the root. Then the leaves, the flowers, the branches, the trunk, the twigs-everything-will be nourished. Then your love for the tree will be properly expressed. Similarly, if you love your countrymen, if you want to see that they become educated, advanced economically and mentally and physically, then what do you do? You pay taxes to the government; you don't hide your income tax. You simply pay taxes to the central government, and your money will be distributed to the education department, to the defense department, to the hygiene department-everywhere.

These are crude examples, but they show that if you actually want to love everyone and everything, you should love Krishna. You'll not be frustrated, because loving Krishna is complete. When your love is complete, you'll be completely satisfied. It is just like when you eat food to your full satisfaction: you say, "I am satisfied; I don't want any more."

So, this Krishna consciousness movement is very simple. Although it was inaugurated five hundred years ago by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, it is even older than that, since it is spoken of in the Vedic scriptures. From the historical point of view, this Krishna consciousness movement has existed at least since Lord Krishna appeared on the surface of this planet five thousand years ago. And more recently, five hundred years ago, Lord Caitanya expanded the movement. His mission is aradhyo bhagavan, to propagate the worship of Bhagavan, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Tattva of Ratha Yatra
Compiled based on a lecture by HH Gour Govind Swami (Jul 11, 94 - Bhubaneswar)

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

This is really beautiful. I've been wanting to send this a long time now to motivate you for coming to Charlotte… But never got a chance ! Anyway, read this … It's amazing … And try to read it remembering HH Gour Govind Swami … It'll carry that much more potency … It's a long lecture. And since a lot of people have been complaining on the size of the message, I tried to compile it. Ofcourse if you want the whole one, listen to the lecture !!! It's awesome.

Btw, just as a note - The ratha yatra begins at 10.30am on Sunday at the UNC campus. For information visit www.bhaktiyoga.org.

Hare Krishna !!!

Our heart is the seat of the Lord. But unless our heart is purified of all material contamination-duplicity, crookedness, desire for material enjoyment, desire for material liberation, desire for name, fame, prestige, and adoration-the Lord won't sit there. The day before Ratha-Yatra is called Gundica-marjana, the cleaning of the Gundica temple, when the Lord, as Caitanya Mahaprabhu, cleaned the Gundica temple with His own hands, along with His associates, and showed us how to make our hearts purified. That is the tattva of gundica-lila.

The tattva behind Ratha-yatra is as follows. Krishna is navakisora, always new and fresh. He never grows old. He is natabara, always in a dancing mood, and fickle, cancala. His form is gopa-vesa, that of cow-herd boy with a very simple garment. He is syama tribhanga lalitha, bent in three places. He is venu murali vadana, with a flute in His hand touching His lips. A peacock feather on His head-that is Krishna in Vrajabhumi. That Krishna in Vrajabhumi is His real form. There Krishna plays with the cowherd boys and the damsels of Vrajabhumi. All the paraphernalia for His transcendental play with the cowherd boys and the damsels of Vrajabhumi is there. And Krishna's form is befitting for that play.

When Krishna went to Mathura and then Dvaraka, he was in the royal garb of a king, because Krishna is king in Dvaraka with all royal opulence. But the Vrajavasis don't want to see Krishna in this form. The residents of Vrajabhumi are very dear, very intimate, very close to Krishna. They have no awe and reverence. This is pure love.

They told Him 'Oh Krishna ! We don't want to see this form. Come to Vrndavana. That Vrndavana is waiting with all paraphernalia. The kunjas are there. Everything is there. Everything is waiting for you! Oh Krishna ! We will drag You there. We don't want to see you in this royal garb.' This is Ratha Yatra. Taking Jagannatha, Who is Syamasundara, to Vrajabhumi. This is the mood in which Caitanya Mahaprachu pulled the Ratha cart.

Therefore, Prabhupada said if you can, do Ratha Yatra every day. Drag Krishna to Vrndavana, to your heart. If one sees Lord Jagannatha on the Ratha Yatra, his way for liberation is open. The sinful activities are neutralized. Now he should protect himself. Just like a disease, the fever is subsided. Now one should be careful not to relapse the fever. One shouldn't go back and entangle oneself again. Then ones liberation is guaranteed.
